3 February 1995 - Update: Crater Lake, Mt Ruapehu continues to heat and the minor phreatic (steam) eruptions which commenced on 13 January 1995 are continuing to occur.
Two small events were observed on 29 January when scientists visited Crater Lake, and reports from tramping and climbing parties indicate small phreatic events are occurring on most days. The lake temperature had risen to 51.4°C, indicating a decline in the rate of heating.
The ARGOS satellite monitoring equipment can only record temperatures to 47°C but continues to record acoustic noise levels. The level of volcanic tremor and acoustic noise have risen slightly, reflecting the increased steam flow into the lake. Intermittent rumbling sounds reported on 29 January are consistent with collapse of steam bubbles in the lake.
Alert Status
Available indicators continue to suggest that the current heating cycle is a typical one. The Volcanic Alert Level remains at Level 2 and we recommend restrictions on access remain at present levels.
